Our History
Amsterdam Housing Authority was established in 1957 by residents and leaders concerned about the need for clean, safe, affordable housing for senior citizens and families in the community.
In 1970, that vision became a reality with the opening of New Amsterdam Apartments, the High Rise for senior citizens and handicapped persons, and the Garden Apartments for families.
AHA later added Stratton Apartments for senior citizens in 1976 and the Section 8 Rental Assistance Program in 1977.
Our Mission
The mission of the Amsterdam Housing Authority is to develop and operate each project solely for the purpose of providing decent, safe, and sanitary housing for eligible families.
AHA operates in a manner that promotes serviceability, economy, efficiency, stability of the projects, and the economic and social well-being of tenants.
AHA does not deny housing opportunities to eligible applicants based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, or political or union affiliations.
Board of Commissioners
Amsterdam Housing Authority is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners. The Mayor of Amsterdam appoints five board members who serve five-year terms, and two Resident Commissioners are elected by residents of the Authority to serve two-year terms.
Commissioners are the governing officers of the Authority. Their responsibilities include setting policies, creating a vision for current and future programs, approving budgets, and ensuring that AHA operates according to law and HUD regulations.
The Executive Director serves the Board and manages AHA staff and day-to-day operations.

Agency Plans
The Public Housing Reform Act requires submission of both a Five-Year and an Annual Plan. The Five-Year PHA Plan describes the agency’s mission and long-term strategy, while the Annual Plan provides details about current programs, resident populations, and housing needs.
The PHA Plan is a comprehensive guide to public housing agency policies, programs, operations, and strategies for meeting local housing needs and goals.
